Workington town centre will be transformed into a bygone era as West Cumbria's newest retro festival gets under way this weekend.

Vintage In The Town takes over Workington tomorrow with live music, street entertainment, fairground rides, vintage fashion and craft stalls, an art trail, street food and heritage bus tours.

A vintage marquee will host traders showcasing their wares, from textile designs and clothing from the past, to furniture and handicrafts.

Plumbland business owner Anne Sowerby, who runs Sassy Property Styling, will be there to show off her newly refurbished vintage caravan.

Mrs Sowerby said: "I have transformed a 1979 Thomson Glendale two berth caravan into a vintage sassy design space to show what you can do regardless of the size or space you have.

"I was inspired by George Clarke's Amazing Spaces and had been looking out for a small caravan that I could create into a little amazing space.

"I'm looking forward to showing people my vintage caravan and having a chat about our staging interiors."

The 1960s beat band The Fortunes will be headlining the festival.

Other artists to take the stage include Cindy Hoten, tribute band Abba Sensation, Haig and Judy And The Hotrods.

Students at Lakes College have curated an art trail with artwork on display at many venues across Workington.

Hair and beauty students will also be on hand to give festival-goers a vintage makeover and students from the catering department will provide afternoon tea.

An exhibition of retro clothing from the wardrobe department at the Theatre Royal with memorabilia and props will be open on the Friday and Saturday.

The festival coincides with the 90th anniversary of the opening of the Port’s Prince of Wales Dock and Workington Transport Heritage Trust will hold tours to the town’s port, which is not normally open to the public, to see the new £2 million Shannon class lifeboat Dorothy May White.

Last year the Times & Star, Whitehaven News and RNLI launched an appeal to raise money to purchase the vessel and festival organisers are hoping the event will help make up some of the cash still needed.

Helen Fowler, organiser, said: "Students at Lakes College are really excited and catering students are already busy preparing scones.

"We're looking forward to seeing everybody coming along with their dancing shoes and having an amazing day."

Vintage In The Town follows the success of the town's three Paint the Town Red festivals, which attracted thousands of visitors.

Scoop, which owns the town centre, Allerdale council and Workington Town Council are the main supporters of the event, together with Workington Rotary Club.
