PUBLIC views are being sought on potential electoral boundary changes within Egremont.

A community governance review, which was requested by Egremont town council, outlines plans which would see two wards instead of the current four.

Currently the wards are South (2849 electors), North (1456), Central (1827) and East (78). The proposal outlines an Egremont South Ward, with 2927 electors, and a North Ward including 3283 electors.

The consultation period will run for six weeks between October 24 and December 5 and a drop-in session is to be held in the Market Hall.

"Ultimately the recommendations made in this review should bring about improved community engagement, more cohesive communities and better local democracy," said Coun David Moore, portfolio holder for nuclear and corporate services.

The overall number of councillors would not change as the two wards would have five each. If the changes are agreed they will come into effect at the next Parish Council elections in May 2019.

Speaking previously, the council's chair Lena Hogg said: "We don't want to reduce our numbers as we're happy with 10 as there's no cost to the public. But in reality, we all work for the whole of Egremont and it is confusing - and unnecessary - that we are split into four wards."

The consultation document will include a map showing exactly which areas are affected.
