A Whitehaven man who works tirelessly to raise the profile of his community has appeared in a national political campaign.

Carl Walmsley, 37, known as Wammo, appears in a new campaign video for the Labour Party which highlights the impact of Tory cuts.

Wammo, who runs the MirehouseMatters group with his wife Louise, talks about the lack of opportunities for youngsters in the area.

He also voices his support for Jeremy Corbyn and the "good things" he would do for the country and working class people.

The video, which features Wammo's nine-year-old son, Tyce as well, was filmed in Mirehouse Labour Club and around the estate.

Wammo said the producer, Josh Cole, and Jeremy Corbyn's son, Tommy Corbyn, had heard about his community work late last year and asked if they could interview him while they were in the area.

Wammo said: "My son Tyce was invited along and we got talking about how little there was for the children of the estate.

"Nothing came about it for a while until they approached me a couple of weeks ago asking if they could use some snippets of the interview for a national Labour broadcast.

"Being a Labour supporter at the national level, I was more than happy to oblige.

"I was happy with how it was portrayed and I pride myself on helping and representing the working class folk of the estate the best I can in all the community work I do."

Wammo, who won volunteer of the year at last year's West Cumbria Community Heroes Awards, now has ambitions to run for Mirehouse seats in both the town and borough council elections as an independent candidate in 2019.

He said this would give him "a better opportunity to help residents as much as possible".
