Suncream and plenty of water were the order of the day as women from across Cumbria raced for life.

There was glitter, ribbons, wigs, tutus, angel wings and a sea of pink T-shirts as more than 1,000 women and girls turned out for the massive event.

More than £100,000 was raised for Cancer Research UK from the weekend’s Race for Life events in Carlisle.

These included the 5k Pretty Muddy obstacle course on Saturday and yesterday’s 5k and 10k routes round Bitts Park.

Cancer Research UK organiser Fran Kippax-Geary said: “It has been an incredible weekend.

“The inflatable team at the Pretty Muddy event said it was the best event they had been to.

“The enthusiasm and gusto shown by the women there and again on Sunday was amazing. It was Father’s Day, but we have had such great support from everyone taking part and the volunteers who have come out to help us.

“It has been an amazing event.”

Some who took part just wanted to raise money for the charity, like Eli Richmond from Carlisle, who was the first home in the 10k race with the impressive time of 42 minutes.

Others had deeply personal reasons, such as losing loved ones to cancer, or having cancer themselves.

Jayne Fullerton was running with some of her friends in memory of her mother, Angela.

She was diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago and died last September.

Jayne, 24, of Cotehill, near Carlisle, said: “I’m not a runner, but I have done it every year since mum was diagnosed.

“Mum walked it with some friends last year and this year we decided to do the Pretty Muddy course and the 10k.”

Gill Little was among 13 friends and relatives of Jenn Morrow who walked the 10k course as Jenn’s Angels, each wearing a pink t-shirt with a photograph of Jenn on the back.

Jenn, of Longtown, battled cancer for four years but died in October 2015.

Gill, of Gretna, said: “We are taking part in the 10k in memory of Jenn, to do her proud and make sure she is not forgotten.

“We know what she went through and it could affect any one of us.

“It is a great event and every penny counts.

“We are going to do it every year for Jenn.

“Not all of us will be able to make it every year, but we all want to keep her memory alive.”
