BRITISH punk music legends UK Subs lead the line-up alongside some of Cumbria's finest in Whitehaven this bank holiday.

They are joined at the Solway Hall on Monday May 1 by No Thrills, The Muff Wigs and The Scumbrians.

Rising from the original English punk movement, UK Subs have well and truly made their name on the punk scene.

Releasing 26 albums with one for every letter of the alphabet across a 41-year career, they remain one of the most respected punk bands of all time.

Last year they released the last album in the series, Ziezo - and it could be the final official release from the veteran band.

Their early style combined the energy of punk and the rock and roll edge of the then thriving pub rock scene, as they registered hit singles, such as Stranglehold, Warhead, Teenage, and Tomorrow's Girls.

The band played several John Peel sessions in 1977 and 1978 for BBC Radio 1, and played some opening gigs for The Police, before recording their most successful studio albums, Another Kind of Blues and Brand New Age. Their biggest-selling album came with 1980s release Crash Course.

Many band members have come and gone in that time, but the focal point has always been iconic frontman Charlie Harper.

Penrith band No Thrills are one of the county's most experienced names. Having been a part of the scene for around 20 years, their recent successes have seen them appear at the prestigious Rebellion Festival in Blackpool, and sign a deal with a US label to distribute latest album, Razorblades, worldwide.

Five-piece outfit The Muff Wigs, from Workington, will be playing material from last year's debut album, No More Excuses. Another experienced act, they have shared the stage with the likes of Cockney Rejects, Sham 69, and Slaves, so this is another top name to add to their list.

Completing the bill are hometown act The Scumbrians. They too released their debut full-length in 2016, showcasing their old school-influenced punk in the vein of Circle Jerks and Bad Religion.

Doors open at 7pm, and tickets are available from the venue's box office.
