Whitehaven Academy is set to close for most pupils on Thursday and Friday, as teachers go on strike.

The NASUWT teachers unions has confirmed today that its members are set to go on strike on Thursday.

And two other teachers unions – the NUT and ATL – had previously confirmed their members are set to take strike action on Friday. Staff are expected to form a picket line outside the school.

It means the school will be closed to all year groups on these days, except Year 11 pupils and sixth form students taking mock exams.

A spokeswoman for Bright Tribe said the trust has been "working closely" with the unions to resolve concerns raised by staff.

She said: "Following a recent meeting between Bright Tribe and the trade unions a number of actions were proposed and sent to union representatives for their approval and feedback. Bright Tribe also proposed a subsequent meeting in February in order to discuss progress.

"We are currently awaiting a response and have urged the ATL, NUT and NASUWT to hold any further strike action until this meeting has taken place.

"To minimise educational disruption as much as possible, the school with be open for Year 11 students on both days and a small number of Sixth Form students who have mock exams on Friday. The school will be closed for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 on both days.

She added: "Bright Tribe is fully committed to working with all staff and trade unions in order to improve standards and provide a good level of education for students at The Whitehaven Academy."
