Rugby league clubs throughout Cumbria will observe a minute's applause before games on Saturday in memory of a young player.

Kieran Poole, known as Skully, died, died at the West Cumberland Hospital on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old played for Ellenborough Rangers rugby league club. He watched his team on Saturday although he could not play because of an injured hand.

The club posted a tweet on Monday saying: "Everyone at Elbra is saddened to hear of the loss of not only a good player but a very likeable lad. Rest in Peace Skully."

Cumberland Amateur Rugby League said Mr Poole's death was "devastating" and described him as a long-serving player and "a lively and much-loved character".

In a newsletter the league expressed condolences to his family and asked all clubs to observe the minute's applause.

There was sympathy too from Broughton Red Rose rugby club, who posted on Facebook: "Extremely saddening news coming out of Maryport about the passing of Ellenborough's young player Kieran Poole.

"He was known by many at our club and they all spoke highly of him.

"Our thoughts go out to all his family and friends and everyone at Ellenborough."

Tributes to Mr Poole and messages of support to his partner, two children and extended family have been widely posted on Facebook.

Joanne Harris said it seemed the whole of Maryport was "totally and utterly shocked".

Kieron Rumney added: "You are the other half of my Kie. We grew up together, learnt so much together and had some of the craziest times ever. I'll never forget all the good times and I will never forget your voice. I knew that voice anywhere."

Ben Rennick wrote: "RIP Skully. They broke the mould when they made you."

Mr Poole was taught in Maryport, including at Netherhall School.

Laura Morgan, who was a teaching assistant at Maryport Infant School when he was a pupil, said she was shocked and saddened by his death.

The cause of Mr Poole's death has not been released and the matter has been passed to the coroner.
