A bowls club took on town councillors in a bid to promote the sport in the area.

Egremont Town Council, which leases the bowling green to Egremont Bowls Club, agreed to the match as it tries to raise the game's profile.

Councillor Jacqui Smith, who helped to organise the event, said: "We wanted to promote the bowling club. It was a brilliant day, with Marjorie Percival from the club finishing in joint first place with councillor Sam Pollen.

"We had a great turn out. The club put on a lovely tea afterwards in its newly-painted club house."

Recently, Sellafield apprentices revamped the bowling club by giving the building a new lick of paint and collecting rubbish. It was part of plans to encourage younger people to get involved.

The day-to-day running and maintenance of the green is usually carried out by volunteers from Egremont bowling club.

And next the town council plans to introduce the sport to schoolchildren.

"We are now organising a game between Bookwell School and St Bridget's School and we will hopefully get more schools playing next year," said Coun Smith.

"It was my first game but I have been on the bowling green committee since being elected to the town council. I thought it was great fun and I'm really looking forward to another game, I may even join the club in the future!"

The day was also attended by town councillors Michael McVeigh, Neil Ferguson and Jean Lewthwaite.
