Hundreds of riders enjoyed a weekend of Prosecco, stunning scenery and gruelling challenges at a cycling festival this weekend.

More than 200 cyclists lined up for West Lakes Cycling Festival's centrepiece Tour de Moor sportive on Sunday.

Supporters lined the streets of Cleator Moor to see off the cyclists and the riders were greeted to a warm reception as they finished the 32-mile slog.

The mammoth challenge saw riders head into the Ennerdale Valley from Cleator Moor before completing climbs at Cauda and Steel Brows.

The fastest time was recorded by Whitehaven rider Nick Jones who completed this in one hour and 26 minutes.

Many of those took part were riding as individuals, but there were also local cycling clubs joining in such as Honister 92, Team XIII, West Coast Velo and VC Cumbria.

The festival kicked off with a Puddings and Prosecco ladies only ride on Friday evening - 70 riders took part in the short social ride with a choice of two distances either eight or 17 miles.

The leisurely ride was followed by a selection of puddings and a glass of Prosecco at Cleator Moor Civic Hall.

British Cycling held a Sky Ride local on the Saturday afternoon which started at the Copeland Bowling Centre. The guided ride took around 30 cyclists out towards Ennerdale.

The festival is organised by West Coast Challenge Events and it is now in its third year.

Organiser Jo Wear, said: "It was another fantastic weekend of cycling based fun in Cleator Moor. We would like to thank the riders who came along to take part, the volunteers who help to run the event and all of the spectators who turned out on the route to encourage the riders.

"We would also like to thank Cyclewise Cockermouth for providing mechanical support at the events, Bill Morley for allowing us to use the Civic Hall, and Cleator Moor Town and Copeland Borough Councils for their continued support."

Jo also thanked Team XIII for running registration, marshalling and providing the sweepers on Friday's event.

Nick Ford, a Cleator Moor town councillor and part of Town Team which also supported the event, saw Tour de Moor riders off from the civic hall.

He said: "It's in a handy location and there are some great places to cycle to from here. It's looking like it's going to be an annual event so the Town Team and the town council are looking to support more activities at the festival in future years."
