A school sleepover helped to raise money for a tribute to a much-loved teaching assistant and teach children about continents.

Thornhill Primary School pupils stayed over at the school during a fundraiser for a bench in memory of Jean Gale who died earlier this year.

The sleepover involved learning about the world's different continents, roasting marshmallows over tea lights and reading a bedtime story.

"All the children thoroughly enjoyed their sleepover experience, they gained world knowledge as well as developing their independent and social skills which they will use throughout their lives," said Helen Toman, admin officer at Thornhill Primary School.

"All money raised will be going towards a bench in memory of Mrs Gale who was a teaching assistant at Thornhill Primary School for many years and sadly died earlier this year."

The bench will be used by students during their lessons in the school's new outdoor area.

During the sleepover, each pupil had a passport which let them visit the five areas - North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Africa.

In North America the children learned to line dance while in South America they competed in different sporting activities inspired by the Rio Olympics.

On their visit to Asia the students made Sri Lankan masks and had their face painted in Indian designs. While in Europe they played football, inspired by Euro 2016, and in Africa the children created detailed dot paintings.

Eventually they settled into their tents and teachers read them a bedtime story, with a glass of milk and a biscuit.
