A decorative flower pot that was set into PC Barker’s headstone has been stolen in an act that has “devastated” his family.
“This is the lowest of the low,” said wife Hazel. “We are heartbroken and so very hurt that someone would do this.
“To do this to any grave is despicable, but to do this to Bill and my family is absolutely unforgivable.”
PC Barker, a father-of-four from Egremont, died in the floods of November 2009 while directing traffic away from the crumbling Northside bridge in Workington. The theft came to light on Tuesday night when Hazel’s sister, Susan Rosewarne, went to place some flowers at the grave at Egremont Cemetery.
Mrs Barker added: “There’s a picture of Bill on the headstone so those responsible knew exactly who they were stealing from. I hope someone reads this so they know the devastating impact this has had on my family. Shame on you.”
