THOSE who have gone above and beyond for Egremont have been honoured for their dedication to the area.

Elvina Quayle, of the Villas, was presented with Egremont’s Good Citizen award by the town council for her help in the community.

The nominees must reside in Egremont Parish (Egremont, Moor Row, Bigrigg) and have contributed to the place they live in.

Along with her parents, Elvina, a florist, has dedicated over 70 years to the people of Egremont and was presented with the award for her talent with flowers as well as her pleasant manner.

Elvina owned Jenkinson’s flower shop before she retired in June and has also dedicated her time to local fundraising events.

Egremont councillor Michael McVeigh said: “Elvina, and her parents before her, ran the florist in Egremont for nearly 70 years, giving great service above and beyond their normal business demands.

“They supported numerous charities and fundraising without publishing or letting anyone know what they had done as I know personally from my year as Mayor, with their generosity helping me raise funds for my chosen charities.”

Town council clerk Geraldine Pritchard said: “She will be sorely missed but the town council wish her many happy years of retirement.”

Philip Graham, the runner up, was nominated for the award due to the work he has carried out with Whitehaven Community Trust.

The trust carries out a range of activities in Whitehaven to help meet the needs of local people, especially with disadvantaged young people.

After spending six years doing voluntary work for the trust, Philip, who lives on Main Street, is now employed by them as he continues to help in the community.

The award was first presented in 2001 and last year was awarded to Lee Butterworth, who was nominated for his work organising volunteers to clear up areas of Copeland.
