HELPING people affected by cancer is the aim of Macmillan and Sellafield's support group 'Stronger Together'.

The Macmillan Cancer Support bus joined group members to host joint events in Whitehaven and Cleator Moor offering information and advice.

Representatives of the bus were in Whitehaven's Market Place yesterday (Thursday), while workers from Macmillan and the ‘Stronger Together’ group were on hand, at the town's Albion Square, with information and advice. A second event is taking place in Cleator Moor Square today (Friday).

There were also opportunities for quiet and confidential discussion.

The ‘Stronger Together’ group was founded by Ged Blaney, a Sellafield Ltd employee, who died last year of cancer. He established the group to give support and information, where appropriate, to any present or past Sellafield Limited employees, and their family or carer, who are affected by cancer.

Ian Andrew is chairman of the group. He said: "Ged set up the group three years ago after he recognised there was a need for it.

"The group offers people a safe place to relax, talk or listen. It can also signpost them to further help.''

'Stronger Together' is sponsored by Sellafield Ltd and works in partnership with various groups including the Citizens Advice Bureau, various health professionals and other local support groups.
