WHITEHAVEN library is to be closed permanently on Sundays.

Cumbria County Council agreed to a six-month trial of the Sunday closure, from January to June, and after no complaints were received during this period, the permanent closure looks set to be agreed by councillors on Friday.

The library was previously open from noon to 4pm on Sundays but will now be closed so staffing hours can be used to keep Copeland's other 12 libraries open for longer.

Councillors agreed to the initial six-month trial period after being told by council officers: "Current footfall would show that this has the least impact on the public but would free up additional resources to support the remaining libraries."
