A large wooden mounted salmon, a 14-point red stag head and a collection of Wilk cartoons featuring local fell hunt packs are among the highlights of Mitchells' next sporting sale next week.

The most valuable lot in the sale is expected to be a Fochaber-style carved wooden half block mounted salmon weighing about 30lb.

The piece, which is expected to make between £1,800 and £2,200 is stamped at the back by Farlows of London and possibly was carved and painted by John and Dhuie Tully.

A Malloch carved wooden half block representation of a 19lb salmon, caught on the Craggan pool, River Tay on February 3, 1911, has an estimate of £1,000 to £1,500.

Top lot in the taxidermy section with an estimate of £500 to £800 is The Heald Stag, a 14 point red stag head, shot by Grizedale’s head forester Bill Grant in 1967 at Heald Brow. Mr Grant helped to establish the Grizedale sculpture trail along with Peter Davies of Northern Arts.

The highest estimate in the guns section is for an AYA Churchill 12 bore side-by-side sidelock ejector shotgun which is expected to make £500 to £800.

Also of particular interest are a Joseph Lang 12 bore side-by-side push-forward underleaver shotgun made in 1884 for a Baron, with an estimate of £300 to £500, and a Stephen Grant 12 bore side by side sideleaver shotgun made in 1874 for a G H Marshall esq., which is expected to make between £150 to £250.

A Benelli Montefeltro 20 bore semi-automatic shotgun in as new condition has an estimate of £250 to £350.

The gun section also includes other makers such as W J Jeffery of London, Graham of Cockermouth and Atkinson of Lancaster and Kendal.

There is also a good number of quality gun cases including W J Jeffery of London and Holland and Holland, expected to make £200 to £300 each, and a double gun case by Joseph Lang of 22 Cockspur Street London valued at £100 to £150. Also to be sold are binoculars by Zeiss and a pair of Swarovski EL 8.5x42 WB binoculars with an estimate of £500 to £800.

The air gun section has a Daystate Huntsman classic .22 pre-charged air rifle fitted with a Optisan Mamba scope which is expected to make £300 to £400. An FX Verminator .177 pre-charged air rifle fitted with a Hawke scope is likely to make £200 to £300 and the sections also features a single owner collection of vintage air weapons.

The sale also includes a fine selection of hunting knifes including a vintage Puma Waidblatt estimated at £100 to £150 and a Puma Mountain Stag valued at £50 to £80.

Sporting art includes a single owner collection of 12 Wilk cartoons of the local fell hunt packs with estimates ranging from £50 to £500 each. One, depicting a huntsman and hounds looking at a bikini clad bather as she points to a fox escaping, is expected to make between £100 and £150.

Hunting whips by Swain and a fine horn shafted whip with a 15ct gold collar belonging to William Rockliffe, wiper in for the Windermere Harriers 1947 to 1956 has an estimate of £100 to £150.

The fishing section features 35 Hardy reels including a single owner collection of 20 Hardy fly reels valued between £50 to £300 each and other Hardy reels including Perfect, Marquise and Silex. The sale also includes a selection of quality fishing rods by Hardy and Sage.

The sale takes place on Saturday, October 7.

Lots can be viewed at Mitchells' saleroom in Station Street on Friday, October 6, from 3pm to 7pm, and from 8.30am on the day of the sale.
