A £2,200 donation has been made to the West Cumberland Hospital in memory of a popular Whitehaven sportsman.

The family of Ged Blaney handed over the money after it was raised following a memorial cricket day.

Ged - a former Whitehaven Rugby League player - died aged 49 in March 2015 following a brave battle with cancer.

The money raised from the event has already paid for hot and cold fans, and a microwave oven for the Henderson Suite, and it is hoped iPads will now be bought for the Loweswater Suite.

Lynne, Ged's wife, said her and the couple's children, Rachael, Nathan and Luke, a promising young cricketer, had been "overwhelmed'' by the generosity of those who had attended the day organised by Whitehaven Cricket Club.

"The money raised has gone to the Henderson Suite where Ged had his chemotherapy treatment and to the Loweswater Suite where he spent his final days,'' she said.

Another Ged Blaney Memorial Day will be held on August 28 at Whitehaven Cricket Club with entries now been taken.

Organiser, Phil McCormick, said if there are sufficient entries practice games could be arranged on the weekends leading up to the tournament.

Last year's event saw teams included Ged's team-mates from Netherhall FC and St Benedict's RUFC, as well as his Sellafield workmates and close friend, Sam Pollen, take part.

The day was sponsored by the GMB, with support from convenor Joe Murdock, as well donations from Sellafield Limited, Sellafield Contractors Safety Committee, St Benedicts RU, Netherhall FC, Kells RLFC and Neil Carruthers.

Lynne also thanked Phil and his wife, Mary, Whitehaven Cricket Club and its supporters.
