Parts of Cumbria could be hit with snow today - with the highest routes potentially seeing 15cm fall.

Forecasters are warning a band of heavy rain is to hit north and west Cumbria with the Met Office issuing a snow alert for today.

The yellow warning was in place from 3am this morning until 3pm this afternoon.

The rain will turn to snow on higher routes above 200m and to lower levels for a time, the Met Office says.

The warning is in place for much of north and west Cumbria, including places like Carlisle, Keswick and Workington.

A spokesman said: "Accumulations of 5cm to 10cm of snow are likely above 300m, much of this falling in a short period. 15cm may accumulate on the highest routes above 400 metres."

They added: "Some roads and railways are likely to be affected by snow with longer journey times by road, bus and train services. Some flooding on roads is also possible."
