He was aiming to encourage at least 150 residents to join their local credit union which was offering cash bonuses to those who signed up and saved.
Copeland councillor Peter Tyson, chairman of Whitehaven and Egremont District Credit Union, said: “We are delighted to be involved in this week of action with the England Illegal Money Lending Team and other partners.
“We hope to increase our membership at the credit union and at the same time help to get the important message out there about stopping loan sharks.’’ Over 50 people have currently signed up.
Tony Quigley, head of the England Illegal Money Lending Team, said: “Illegal money lenders are a scourge on our communities, causing misery and fear to their victims. They often trap people into a spiral of debt and use bullying tactics such as intimidation, threats and violence to enforce repayment.
“If you or someone you know has been a victim of a loan shark, we urge you to get in touch on 0300 555 2222. Your call will be handled by an IMLT officer and all information will be treated in the strictest confidence.’’
The first 150 residents who signed up to a credit union were offered free membership (normally £3) and a £25 bonus will be credited to the account of those who save £5 a month for three consecutive months.
Events during the week were part-funded via cash confiscated from illegal money lenders through the courts and giving it back to the local communities affected by loan sharks.
