An emotional service was given as Bransty Royal British Legion laid up two of their standards in St James' Church.

A new standard was blessed – which must be done prior to it being paraded.

Ian Fisher, branch chairman of the Bransty Royal British Legion Branch (BRBLB), said: “The Rev Robert Jackson conducted the service and gave a very emotional sermon. Martin Ivison the bugler was flawless when he played the The Last Post and Reveille.”

He added that the standards are not just flags, but sacred emblems which have been “solemnly dedicated in ample form”.

“Our standards are all of like design as emblems of brotherhood and equality. Many of these standards have lain in the sacred dust of the battlefields of the empire,” he said.

Mr Fisher thanked everybody who attended the service and those who took part. Escorts were provided by the Whitehaven Sea and Air Force Cadets.

The BRBLB was formed in 1939 on the site of the fever hospital at Bransty and is still an active branch supporting the ex-service, serving men and women along with their dependants.
