TWO coastguard teams, a rescue helicopter and an RNLI lifeboat were scrambled to a sea rescue between Workington and Whitehaven on Thursday.

Whitehaven Coastguard said emergency services received multiple 999 calls reporting a paraglider had downed in the water near to Cunning Point shortly after 4.30pm.

Initial calls to a gliding school instructor on high ground confirmed that all members in his group were accounted for, but they could not vouch for any others that may have been out.

Following an initial search between Harrington and Parton by Whitehaven and Maryport Coastguards, St Bees RNLI was called out and helped search the shoreline from the water while coastguards continued to carry out a more comprehensive look on dry land.

Following the joint efforts and further talks with gliding groups it was confirmed that everyone was accounted for and rescue teams were stood down. The callout was recorded as a ‘false alarm with good intent’.
