TESCO staff pulled on their gardening gloves to help at Hensingham Primary School.
The supermarket employees worked with pupils to show them how to plant and to help build garden furniture.
Organised by Dulcie Hyland, Tesco's community champion, the work is to help the school prepare for their entry to the Whitehaven in Bloom competition.
Alison Hogge, of Whitehaven Tesco's store, said: "It was an amazing day with staff giving up their time off to help. We had all the different ages of children helping us plant flowers, washing old car tyres to use as planters and put together garden benches.''
Nick Fish, headteacher at Hensingham Primary School, said: "I would like to thank all the Tesco staff for their help. They achieved so much during the day.
"The pupils had a lovely day and gained so much out of it.''
