A silent Santa's grotto will be set up in Whitehaven to allow children with autism to make their Christmas wishes.

Whitehaven Civic Hall is hosting the event on Wednesday, December 14 to cater for youngsters who may not be able to handle the usual grotto.

Loud music and other noises can make it difficult for children with autism - or other learning difficulties - to enjoy their experience so organisers have decided to run a one-off silent grotto between 3pm and 7pm.

"My son goes to school with a little lad who has autism and there isn't too much for them to do," said Donna Kelly, from the Civic Hall.

"A lot of children with autism don't get to go to the Santa's grotto because their parents worry that it can be too much for them. They will be able to cope in this situation.

Visitors to the grotto get to listen to a story from the elves before receiving a gift from Santa. Youngsters can also post their letters in Santa's postbox.

Tickets for the event cost £5 and booking is essential. The usual Santa's grotto is also open now. For more information call 01946 690970 or visit 'The Solway Hall Whitehaven' on Facebook.
