ROY 'Chubby' Brown fans were delighted after a lewd and expletive-filled show at Egremont Market Hall on Wednesday evening.

Within in minutes of walking on stage, the 71-year-old comedian taunted the parish councillors who tried to ban his show earlier this year.

"The council said they don't want me here because I'm too rough..." he said, which was met with a chorus of boos from the crowd.

"Have they seen the state of the town?" he added - to roars of laughter from audience.

Egremont Town Council deemed the show too inappropriate for the Market Hall and tried to have the gig cancelled. However, after over 300 people signed an online petition, the council reversed the call.

Hundreds turned out to see the Chubby and, after a musical opening from cover song singer Denise Danielle, they were chanting for the comedian start his show.

The audience were visibly enjoying the show as they clapped and sang along with Chubby's offensive renditions of Jamie Lawson's Wasn't Expecting That and Justin Bieber's Love Yourself.

David Burns, who started a petition to have the council's decision overturned, said: "I think we as a community tonight have proven we do not need councillors to think for us, it was a ticket event that was very popular i am so glad everyone got behind my petition as we all had a brilliant time and i doubt we will ever see something like this again.

"I really hope Egremont councillors next time ask us what we want. This being said, all our councillors do a brilliant job for Egremont and give up their free time to run this town and they do a brilliant job and we shouldn't forget that."

Tom Grears, 64, of Cleator Moor said: "The council were wrong to try and ban the show, if you don't like it then you just don't go.

"But, he's filled the hall so he's obviously very popular here. Us northerners like a bit of crack."

Karen Shaw, 47, from Egremont said: "There is a lot of people who like his show, judging by how many people have turned up. It was wrong to try and stop it."

Andrew Blockley, 24, from Egremont said: "We don't have much going on here in Egremont so it's good to see so many people together laughing and enjoying themselves.

"There's too much doom and gloom in the news these days, so we all need a good laugh. I'm glad that the show went ahead because the council have no right to tell us what we can and cannot enjoy."

Darren Michael Glover, from Whitehaven, said it was a "great night and good band too".

His wife, Becky Glover, said: "Chubs was great and his Full Monty at the end was hilarious. The amount of people who had to go toilet was ridiculous though. At one point it was like a mass exodus!"
