An Arlecdon man is cycling hundreds of miles to raise money in memory of his grandad.

For every pound Rory Wood, 21, raises in sponsorship he intends to cycle a mile. His total, in aid of Dementia UK currently stands at £665.

He will be cycling the miles between March 15 to April 15.

Rory said: "I have always wanted to raise money for charity in a way that hasn’t been done before, so I came up with £1Miles.

"The beauty is that there really isn’t an end goal to the amount of miles I cycle. It's completely dependent on the support and donations from everyone else.

"By raising the money and completing this 'absurd' adventure I’m hoping to raise awareness to dementia and raise a nice lump sum for Dementia UK.''

His granddad, Thomas, died following dementia and, as part of the fundraising event, Rory will be cycling near to Crummock Water where Mr Wood's ashes were scattered.

Rory, who regularly keeps fit, said: "I have currently raised £665 which is phenomenal and I would love to see all the positivity that money will bring once donated.''

He explained that £167 would pay for a month's support and supervision of an Admiral Nurse who offers specialist support to families living with dementia.

And Rory added: "We all have it within us to not only see great in the world around us, but also do great with small and often insignificant acts of kindness such as riding a bike.''
