YOUNGSTERS put themselves firmly in the driving seat as they faced off to see who could build the fastest rocket car.

The competition has been held at the Energy Coast UTC, at Lillyhall.

Students at the UTC took part in the competition, which each team having built their own car from a standard kit, but with different modifications made to their own specifications.

Pupils from Carlisle's Newman School and Nelson Thomlinson School faced off against their peers from St Joseph's High School in Workington and Cockermouth School at the Energy Coast UTC, in Lillyhall.

The competition coincides with the Bloodhound Project - an ambitious plan to smash the land speed record by building a car that will travel at more than 1,000mph.

Andrew Davidson, science teacher at the Energy Coast UTC, said: "As part of that, the Bloodhound Project approached schools and colleges around the UK and challenged them to build their own car.

"The winners of each one will then go into a national competition final to see who has built the fastest car."
