A revamp is under way of Whitehaven's iconic Waterfront wall feature at West Strand.
Electricity North West has given a £300 grant to Whitehaven Heritage Action Group to support the work being carried out by Seascale painter and decorator Ian Cripps.
The nautical blue wall with its huge stainless steel compass rose welcomes visitors to the harbourside and highlights the town’s long maritime history.
It carries Whitehaven’s latitude and longitude co-ordinates and the compass feature, by internationally renowned artist Alan Dawson, is tilted to the left of vertical so the axis points to the North Star.
The installation, by the Heritage Group in 2000, was in conjunction with Whitehaven Development Company.
The wall is part of the boundary of the electricity substation at West Strand and, after an approach from the Heritage Group, ENW agreed to support the work.
The Heritage Group had already raised sufficient funds to pay for materials.
