The real life experiences of people who are living with early onset dementia have been used to produce a thought-provoking new production.

The Ties That Bind will be shown at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick on Wednesday night.

Combining dynamic physical performance, original music and striking visuals, it tells the story of Paul, a sound engineer whose world is changing as he deals with the effects of dementia and memory loss.

Forced to confront how he can remain connected to those who care about him, he decides to record his own life – before it shifts for ever. Cleverly exploring the way dementia can affect personal relationships.

The show created by Skimstone Arts asks: What it is that binds us to other people if we are no longer recognised by the ones we love and what ultimately connects us to others?

This new drama demonstrates the strength and intimacy of our human relationships and has been created for anyone personally affected by dementia or who knows someone touched by the condition. It is also for carers, family members and professionals who are less recognised, yet nevertheless still supporting in ‘the wings’.

Claire Webster Saaremets, artistic sirector at Skimstone Arts, said: "The piece was commissioned by Edinburgh University and is based on the findings of a research project into dementia, along with stories collected from those who have personal experience of dealing with the condition.

"The Ties That Bind weaves in elements of what we learnt through our conversations and research, as we follow Paul’s story in what is an ultimately inspiring piece of theatre."
