Pupils from across West Cumbria built Lego robots in a competition.

Around 22 teams used state-of-the-art Lego to build programmes to enable the robots to carry out tasks and challenges.

The winners were Keswick School, with Ennerdale Primary School as runners-up. Both teams will head to the national finals to be held in Bristol on February 26.

Organised by Stem Cumbria Ltd, the Firstlego League Tournament, held at St Bees Management Centre, helped pupils understand the principles of computer science, as well as developing skills such as communication.

This year’s theme was Animal Allies, with teams judged on the quality of their robot, a team presentation and a ‘core values’ activity. I

The challenge had three parts - the project where students have to come up with an idea for solving a defined, real world problem, the robot game where they design, build and programme a Lego robot to solve missions on an obstacle course and core values which is the process the children go through to develop their skills including critical thinking, problem solving and teamwork.

Tony Gill, of Stem Cumbria, said: “It was a fantastic event with high levels of enthusiasm and expertise. There was also superb support from local businesses.

“This project will introduce pupils and teachers in primary and secondary schools in Copeland to the First Lego League.

“This is an activity that will help them understand the importance and application of the development of computing and coding skills.

“It will also increase the understanding and importance of employability skills such as working in a team, solving problems and being able to communicate effectively.’’
