A TEAM of volunteers have clubbed together to save Gosforth Library.

The public facility, which was closed by Cumbria County Council last month, reopened its doors to the public at the weekend.

A partnership of volunteers, Gosforth Parish Council and Gosforth Public Hall, has combined to see the return of a service three times a week.

Around 15 local volunteers are set to man the link library, which will be supported by Cumbria County Council through the supply of books, advice and guidance.

Chris Walton, vice chairman of Gosforth Parish Council, said: “It is clear from the number of volunteers that stepped forward, and the meetings we held, that there was a demand for the service and a willingness to make it work.

“We have been able to facilitate a solution in the short term working with our very able volunteers and Gosforth Public Hall Management Committee.

“Our goal now will be to look at alternative sources of funding to see if the partnership can sustain a local service. In the interim, we are grateful to County Councillor Norman Clarkson for a £1,000 grant from his local fund to facilitate the first year.”

The Library will be open from 10am to noon on Saturdays, 1pm to 3.30pm on Mondays and 3pm to 5.30pm on Wednesdays.
