Police are looking for a burglar with a "big belly" who broke into a block of flats.

The unknown man carried out the break-in at the back of complex in Peter Street, Whitehaven, last night around 10.20pm.

A police spokesman said: "A male has approached a rear window to a flat, smashed two panes of glass and let himself into the property by this window."

He then left through the front door taking some items from inside with him, the spokesman added.

The suspect is described as being 6ft 2, of "big build", having a "big belly" and clean shaven.

At the time of the offence he was said to be wearing a hooded top with the cords tied tightly around his head, dark bottoms and carrying a white shopping bag.

As well as the shopping bag he was also carrying a sports kit bag and a wearing a backpack.

Police are are appealing for witnesses on 101. Anyone with information should quote log reference 249 of September 24.
