Plans to extend the life of a waste recycling centre in Copeland have been revealed.

An application is set to be submitted to extend planning permission for Frizington Household Waste Recycling Centre, off Yeathouse Road.

The facility accepts household items including clothes, textiles, books, CD's and DVD's, fridges and freezers, garden waste and wood and timber.

A Cumbria County Council spokesman said: "Cumbria County Council is working alongside the contractor to ensure the planning permission for Frizington HWRC will be extended so that the site can be maintained for the duration of the contract.

"The current permission expires on 31 March 2018. Planning applications are expected to be submitted by the end of this month and further details will be confirmed following the outcome of the application process."

A spokesman for the contractor, Renewi, said: "Renewi is in consultation with the local parish councils regarding an application to extend the current recycling service being provided in Frizington. We look forward to being able to continue to ensure that this vital service can be provided to the local community so that its waste can be recycled to avoid landfill and create useful products instead."

Coun Peter Connolly, of Arlecdon and Frizington Parish Council, said he is delighted an application is being made to extend the planning permission for the facility.

He said: "It's very well used and it's a very good facility for people."

The councillor said people from across West Cumbria travel to the centre to dispose of their household waste.

There is also a household waste recycling centre at Clay Flatts in Workington.

A number of years ago, there were suggestions at a county council local committee meeting about plans for a household waste recycling centre at Lillyhall. A county council spokesman confirmed this week that there are currently no plans for this to happen.
