NEW houses could be built in Egremont if a planning application gets the go-ahead.

Plans for the construction of 27 houses and five garages have been submitted on the former Orgill School site.

The land - on Croadalla Avenue - was used by Orgill Infants School until its amalgamation with the junior school, on Southey Avenue, in 1998.

Now, the current owner - Cliff Court (Redcar) Developments Ltd - is looking to develop the site.

Neil Ferguson, chairman of Orgill and Castle Croft Residents and Tenants Group, said: "It has come out of the blue, the site has been derelict for about the last 10 years. It has swapped hands a number of times.

"It's great that it has been chased up by Egremont Town Council and the mayor of Copeland. It was originally earmarked for houses."

He added: "I would welcome a housing development as long as there is no problem with flooding on the site."
