A village reunion saw people flock from across the globe to meet old friends.

Around 150 past and present residents of Moor Row and Scalegill packed into Moor Row Working Men's Club for the event.

It was organised, for over 50s, after a former resident Eric Thompson, who now lives in Australia, revealed to friends he would be returning home for a final time.

Organisers - Brenda Powe, Barbara Rennoldson, Glenda Lopez, Raymond Cranke and Brenda Irving - arranged the catch-up last month.

Vivien Postlethwaite, who attended the reunion, said: "Large old black and white photos were displayed on the walls around the room, which caused lots of interest. People mingled non stop and the atmosphere was full of happy chatting.

"There were people visiting from Australia and Greece, a strong Yorkshire contingent including Ripon, Barnsley and Richmond, Lancashire and of course from all over Cumbria."

Mr Cranke began the evening with a welcome speech, reminiscing about life in the village and memories of his youth.

A memory book was passed around for people to share their own stories and guest wore name badges to help people recognise old friends.

"Luckily we were issued with name badges at the door, a lot of glancing at a face then quickly to the name badge brought smiles of recognition to many faces," said Mrs Postlethwaite.

Ex-pupils of Moor Row School were also invited to the reunion, which had entertainment from Phil Anthony, a buffet and a raffle.

Profit from the evening will be donated to the village's first responders, who hope to buy a second defibrillator, and left over food was given to Egremont homeless hostel, Calderwood House.
