The passion for parkrun in Cumbria shows no sign of abating - with the launch of a new event for children this weekend.

Keswick junior parkrun officially begins at 9am on Sunday at Lower Fitz Park.

It will be the second weekly junior parkrun event in Cumbria.

Carlisle junior parkrun, which is hosting a red-themed run for Remembrance at 9am Sunday, has been held weekly in Bitts Park for just over a year.

Vanessa Strickland is event director for Carlisle junior parkrun.

It has attracted more than 750 youngsters since its launch in summer 2016.

She said: "It makes my day to see them all turn up and take part. It is the best part of my week.

"The children just love it. We average 90-100 children a week coming out for it."

She added: "Keswick will be awesome and because parkrunners can be tourists and take part elsewhere in the country it is going to be one that really takes off.

"They'll have so many people turning out during holiday times."

Junior parkrun is a series of free weekly, timed 2km events for 4-14 year olds only. They are all run by volunteers.

Barrow is also see the launch of its own junior parkrun event on December 3.

They have developed following the global success of parkrun, free 5km events held every Saturday morning.

Cumbria currently has parkrun events in Carlisle, Workington, Keswick, Penrith, Millom, Fell Foot at Newby Bridge and Barrow.

Carlisle parkrun launched in January 2013.

Its first session attracted more than 100 people. Now approaching its 250th event later this month Carlisle parkrun averages about 220 runners a week.

The county is also home to the UK's first prison-based parkrun event. The Black Coombe event was launched last Saturday at HMP Haverigg.

Free to enter, participants are asked to register online at www.parkrun.org/register and print out their unique barcode.

Barcodes are scanned upon crossing the line and results computed for participants.
