Mitchells in Cockermouth is hoping its next antiques auction will reflect the success of previous sales as a selection of 19th century mirror are put up for grabs.

The gilt mirrors and a selection of Gillows of Lancaster furniture are among the highlights of the firm's sale on August 31 and September 1.

The largest of the mirrors is a giltwood and gesso piece, measuring 146cm wide and 260cm high and expected to make between £2,000 and £3,000.

A matching pair of large Rococo-style gilt-framed mirrors, each measuring 84cm wide and 135cm high, has an estimate of £2,500 to £3,500.

A Florentine giltwood and gesso mirror, 140cm wide and 156cm high, is expected to fetch between £2,500 and £3,000.

An Adam-style giltwood and gesso oval mirror, measuring 115cm wide by 146cm high, has an estimate of £1,500 to £2,500.

The star lot among the furniture is a Victorian Gillows of Lancaster

marquetry desk, which is expected to make around £4,000 to £6,000.

Other lots include a late Victorian French marquetry secretaire chest of drawers, lot 1005, which is likely to sell for between £1,500-£2,000. A pair of Oregon pine Victorian writing tables by Howard and Sons London, lot 1396, have an estimate of £1,200-£1,800.

Clocks going under the hammer include a Regency mahogany and brass bracket clock by W Blanchard Hull, which is expected to sell for between £1,000 and £1,500.

Auctioneers say a set of three Stuart Devlin caddy spoons, dated 1984, 1985 and 1986, have been given a conservative estimate of £200 to £300, with the possibility they could make considerably more.

A bronze and ivory figure of a Dutch girl by Renee-Paul Marquet (1875-1939) could fetch £200 to £300, while a Victorian Black Forest carved bear stick stand has been valued at £300 to £600.

Artworks in the sale include an by Edward H Thompson (1866-1949) of winter on the fells near Keswick.

The sale also features five paintings by Albert Rosser (1915-1969) who was taught by Thompson including.

They include a watercolour entitled Ennerdale, valued at £100 to £150.

On oil on board painting of two women with a boat by Cumbrian artist Michael Bennett is valued at £250 to £350.

An nautical watercolour by Danish artist J Petersen has been given an estimate of £150 to £250.
