Fun fitness sessions led by a former footballer are helping to keep primary school pupils healthy.

Ex-Newcastle, Hull and Crystal Palace midfielder Stuart Green, who also spent time with Whitehaven AFC, has been holding classes at St Patrick’s School in Cleator Moor.

The sessions are funded by the Government as part of the London 2012 Olympic legacy, and they aim to improve students’ health, fitness and well-being.

Green, who also had spells with Carlisle United and Workington, took charge of football training for year five pupils on Tuesday.

Business manager Sarah Johnston said: “Every class gets the chance to have coaching, from reception to year six. This week, year five were playing football on the yard with Stuart. It’s girls and boys and they work on different skills.

“They really enjoy it, the children look forward to him coming into school.

“As part of the school budget there is sports funding, which is part of the Olympic legacy. It is used to benefit the health, fitness and well-being of students.”

Youngsters began the session with a warm-up before carrying out fitness activities and playing a game of football.

The school’s sports funding covers equipment, coaching in a variety of sports, after-school clubs and transport to sports festivals. It also includes staff training.
