SUCCESSFUL students were rewarded for their hard work at a prestigious awards evening.

Over 250 guests attended West Lakes Academy's annual celebration of the outstanding achievements of its pupils.

And Copeland's elected mayor Mike Starkie was invited along as guest speaker.

"Our awards do not only acknowledge success, they recognise many other qualities: ability, struggle, effort and, above all, excellence," said assistant principal Sophie McCabe.

"The academy's awards evening was wonderful, it was a true celebration full of tears of joy, pride and laughter."

During the evening, students were recognised for academic progress, citizenship, attendance and involvement in extra-curricular activities.

Mr Starkie spoke about the exciting and transformational times ahead for Copeland and the important role young people will play.

Notable winners on the evening were Achiraya Thompson (Year 7), Tilly Whitehead (Year 8), Cameron Purdham (Year 9) and Lydia Simpson (Year 10), who were all named 'top student' in their respective year groups.

Achiraya Thompson was also named the top student in the academy due to her hard work and effort throughout the school year.

After the ceremony the celebrations continued as the school held a buffet in the dining hall.

The academy also recently held proms for its year 11 and year 13 students.
