A new organist is needed to play at Whitehaven's United Reformed Church.

The church is looking for an organist to play a range of music at its Sunday morning services and also weddings and funerals.

It follows the departure of organist Richard Brice who has served at the church for the past four years.

Rev Dave Harkison says he is looking to find a permanent organist for the church, on James Street.

He said: "It helps if they have a background in playing church music. They are there to aid the church in singing."

"The church uses mainly Rejoice and Sing and Mission Praise, but other sources are sometimes used for the music. The congregation definitely enjoys a good sing and accompanying the hymns is a real pleasure as the organist is able to feel part of the service."

Since Mr Brice moved out of the county around three weeks ago, recorded music has been used for the congregation to sing along to. Another organist, Nigel Donaldson, also provides cover when needed.

Rev Harkison said the church is looking for someone who would be to play at morning services each week, as well as other services including Good Friday and at Christmas time. Time off on some Sundays off during the year would be available. An annual honorarium of £1,000 would be paid in instalments.

There is also an opportunity to play at weddings and funerals for an additional fee.

Rev Harkison says the church has a "well maintained" two manual Harrison and Harrison organ, built in 1906, which was the result of a collaboration between the celebrated blind organist Alfred Hollins and Colonel Dixon of St Bees.

"If they would like to come to look at the organ and have a go on it, please contact me," he said.
