A new one-way system could be on the cards for part of Whitehaven's Mirehouse estate.

The area around Mirehouse shops, that joins Whinlatter Road and Meadow Road, has been earmarked for a one-way system. The short section of one-way that already exists would be extended, says Cumbria County Council, which, in effect, would create a mini-roundabout around the play area in the centre.

The proposals, on which the public will be consulted, would improve traffic flow in the area and create extra parking for those using Mirehouse shops, says the council.

The scheme has been championed by Mike Hawkins, county councillor for Mirehouse.

The consultation is expected to take place early next year.
