A popular teacher at Whitehaven Grammar School for over 30 years has died aged 96.

Leslie Davies taught chemistry at the grammar school and was also a member of Whitehaven Male Voice Choir.

Mr Davies was born in Port Talbot before completing a chemistry degree at Bristol University.

During the war he joined the Royal Ordnance Factory and was sent to ROF Drigg.

He met local girl Olive Pearce and married in 1948, settling in Frizington.

The couple had two sons Philip, a computer programmer in Bristol, and Colin, a school improvement consultant in Leeds.

Mr Davies was part of Marshall House and became head of applied chemistry. His love led to many projects outside of school, notably as co-author of the text book Investigating Chemistry .

Together with his wife, Mr Davies became a central part of the community in Frizington, especially at St John’s Methodist Church.

He retired in 1981 but had numerous interests including local history, computing and photography.

He joined the Whitehaven Male Voice Choir as a tenor, performing in concerts and festivals.

After Mrs Davies' death in 1991, Mr Davies took the decision to move back to South Wales to be near his identical twin Cyril and younger brother Emlyn.

In later years, he moved to Bristol to be near his son Philip and his three grandchildren.
