Members of Lowca ARLFC have bought potentially life-saving equipment following the death of a darts player.

The man, from a West Cumbrian darts team, suffered a heart attack last year while playing against the Lowca darts side.

As a result, club members raised £1,500 towards a defibrillator which will be housed in a cabinet on the front wall of the Lowca clubhouse.

Bill Armstrong is honorary vice-president of the club. He said: "I had first aid training so gave the man CPR while we waited for the ambulance.

"I had previously thought about getting a defibrillator, and after that I realised we've got to do something about it.''

So, Bill, along with club members Alan Johnson, Paul Martin, and Andrew Martin, walked 10 miles from Cockermouth to Lowca, and were supported by the community who fill in many sponsor forms.

"We want the defibrillator to be used by all members of the community,'' Bill said.

A further £500 was awarded from Cumbria County Council's Local Members Scheme towards the defibrillator.

Suzanne Cooper, a community development officer for the county council, said: "Studies have shown the immediate delivery of CPR, combined with early use of an automated external defibrillator by members of the public, gives a person in cardiac arrest the best chance of surviving, prior to the ambulance service reaching the scene.''
