New area boundaries have been unveiled by the NHS, showing where care hubs will be formed.

The so-called Integrated Care Communities (ICCs) will join health and care services into new teams.

They will see Maryport and Cockermouth under one boundary, and Keswick and the Solway area in another.

The full list is:

  • Carlisle Healthcare ICC
  • Carlisle Network ICC
  • Carlisle Rural ICC
  • Copeland ICC
  • Eden ICC
  • Keswick and Solway ICC
  • Maryport and Cockermouth ICC
  • Workington ICC

Health bosses say the new ICCs will focus on joined up care and improving the health and wellbeing of local people.

The aim is to care for more people in their own homes and focus on preventative medicine to prevent future admissions.

Leaders say the current system is struggling to cope with the changing needs of the population. ICCs have been established to address that.

Stephen Eames, lead for West, North and East Cumbria Health and Care Partnership, said:“We know that the current system isn’t working and things need to change to put Cumbrian people at the heart of our health and care services.

"Joining up health and care services is one of the ways we are planning to do this.

“Current services tend to focus on ill health rather that supporting people to stay well but ICCs will change that. A key element of their success will be working with local communities and supporting them to take a more active role in their health and wellbeing."

Dr Niall McGreevy, Workington ICC GP lead, added: “This is a really exciting time for Cumbria.

"The changes we’ve seen focus on improving patient care and working closely with communities to provide services that work for them. By empowering communities to play a more active role in their own wellbeing we can ease pressure on health and care services and stop problems before they develop.”

Each ICC is based around a group of GP practices and their patients.
