A new nursery's success means it is set to expand from Easter with a dedicated teacher taking over the class.

St Bridget's Catholic Primary School is setting up a nursery class later this year allowing it to take on more youngsters.

Currently, three-year-olds are taught alongside the reception students but the appointment of a dedicated nursery teacher will allow the school to offer more provision.

Headteacher Suzanne Smith said: "When I was appointed headteacher in 2015, I knew that I wanted to expand our age range to include nursery children.

"As a working mum of two little girls, I understand how important it is to parents to have the right childcare arrangements.

"Egremont has some lovely nurseries and I wanted to build on this excellent provision and enhance the transition between these and school.

"We began our nursery in September 2016 with three year olds joining our reception children – but having their own distinct curriculum.

"Such has been the success of the project that we are creating a specific nursery class and are delighted to welcome Natalie Marney as a dedicated nursery teacher after Easter."

Children have already been signed up for a funded 15 hours of care, with many staying longer as parents use employee childcare vouchers or pay for extra hours.

"Visitors often comment on the friendly, caring atmosphere in our school and say that it is much bigger than it looks from outside," said the headteacher.

"We are very fortunate to have big, light classrooms and space to expand.

"This, together with our field, forest, outdoor classroom and lots of space to run around, means we can offer a comprehensive, stimulating and fun environment for our three-year-olds to start their school life."

Pupils at the school enjoyed a health and safety week recently with members of the community, including nurses, the Coastguard and the police popping in to give talks.
