A village club for elderly residents marked its anniversary with dinner and a dance.

Moor Row Jubilee Club celebrated its 40th birthday with a party at the village's working mens' club.

Members enjoyed a meal, cake and a performance by The Maverick, as well as a raffle. The club's committee invited everyone in the village, aged over 55, St Bees pensioners' club and staff members from Asda, where they regularly sell raffle tickets, to the party.

Secretary Rosalie Baty, who joined the club in 2000 after moving to the village, said: "It's been great, we've had a good turnout and I can't believe the amount of raffle prices. Everyone is enjoying themselves.

"I enjoy the companionship, it's a lovely club. It keeps people going."

The club, which has 66 members, usually meets once a fortnight for a cup of tea, to sell homemade produce and listen to a speaker.

Last year, it featured in a national TV advert for the Co-op and secured £700 of community funding.

Vice-chairman Stanley Young said: "We were founded in the year of the Queen's silver jubilee by three ladies, Hannah Irving, Esme Corrie and Thelma Wilson for men over 65 and ladies over 60.

"The club met every two weeks in the church hall and was successful until December 1993 when the ladies decided to retire.

"I was the chair of Bigrigg Circle then and was asked to try to get a committee. I asked Irene Lambert, Joyce Hamilton and Joe Hamilton and they were willing to take over and run the club.

He added: "Now we're going from strength to strength with a really good committee and large support. I hope we can keep going."

Two relatives of the founding members, Brenda Irving and John Wilson, were also invited to the party.
