VETERAN fib-teller Mike Naylor scooped the top prize in this year's World's Biggest Liar competition for the fourth time.

A tall tale about discovering his royal ancestry and a hilarious trip to Buckingham Palace was lauded by the sold-out crowd and a panel of judges at The Bridge Inn in Santon Bridge.

Under his stage name, the Monkey Liar, the 59-year-old, started the imaginative story with a couple of one-liners and then launched into the 15-minute tale.

After cutting himself and, "losing blood quicker than Usain Bolt on speed", Mike said he was whisked up to Cumberland Infirmary where he was told about his royal blood.

He then went on to tell the audience about a disastrous meal with his new-found family in Buckingham Palace to roars of laughter from the 100-strong crowd at Santon.

In second place was Keith Porter from Silverdale, who told the audience about a fishing trip in the Lakes, which ended up with him being dragged down to the Irish Sea by a giant creature.

Third place was scooped by Joe Benson who baffled parts of the audience by telling them about building Hadrian's Wall as an apprentice and downing a Nazi submarine skimming stones, all with a thick West Cumbrian dialect.

We'll have a full round-up in next week's Whitehaven News.
