A new running course exclusively for men will be launched next month.

Thought to be the first of its kind in the county, BodyFit Blokes is for men who want to take the first step into exercise.

Run by coach Tony Jewell and run leader Andy Hayes, the six-week course begins on November 6 in Cockermouth.

Andy, 52, of Gilcrux, said: "BodyFit's existing classes appear to have a demographic of 85 per cent women.

"It was Tony's idea – he started to wonder if there were barriers which were stopping men from joining the existing classes and if we launched a tailor-made course for men, it may encourage them more to start running.

"We don't know what those barriers are but we hope BodyFit Blokes may help break them down.

"We think there's a massive gap in the market for this class. Most funding is dedicated to women as nationally, fewer women take part in any sport.

"It's for all abilities. BodyFit is very inclusive and supportive. It's not like PE and there won't be shouting!"

Andy, a full-time dad-of-two, began running with the club three years ago.

He said: "I've always been active but more or less by myself.

"I was running but when I started with BodyFit, my goal was to run to the edge of the village without stopping, which was a mile.

"When I started classes, I realised there was more to it and I've learnt about technique and how to improve. I’ve definitely benefitted. I now enjoy running on the trail and fells too.

"There's also the social side of it too. Being a single parent of two girls can be quite isolating so the extremely welcoming side of BodyFit is great as you meet some really nice people.

"We just hope we can encourage people on their exercise journey and I hope to pass on my enthusiasm on."

Sam Ayers, BodyFit director, said: "We want to encourage as many men as possible, no matter what they think their fitness level is, to join up.

"Even if you think you can't run, you'll be surprised at what you can achieve at the end of the six-week course."
