Three brave men have been waxed to raise funds for a local cause.

Andrew Bowers, Jamie Dobson and Jeremy Cooper endured painful chest and back waxes in aid of the Whitehaven Bipolar UK support group.

Their excruciating challenge was the grand finale of a charity fundraiser, held at Whitehaven Civic Hall.

An evening of music, entertainment, stalls and food was enjoyed by guests before the sponsored waxing.

Jo Haigh, facilitator of the Whitehaven group, said: “There was a big crowd around the waxing table. It went down really well!”

She said guests donated cash for a chance to rip a strip of wax off the volunteers. Money is also being collected through sponsorship.

Jo says thanks go to all those who provided the disco, entertainment, food, mascots and stalls.

The event raised £467.77. More cash is set to come in from sponsorship from the waxed trio.

Jo said: “The money will pay for new books to help people learn about the condition. It will also go towards leaflets and posters, general support to stay well and out of hospital. It also funds monthly support at the Senhouse Centre.”

The Whitehaven Bipolar UK group covers the area from Barrow to Carlisle. Its current facilitator is Jo, although she is handing over the reins to Indra Cooper.

The group meets on the first Friday of every month between 1pm and 3pm at the Senhouse Centre in Whitehaven. The group also holds two regular meals in summer and at Christmas.
