And celebrity astronaut Tim Peake will address the Whitehaven school pupils via video-link from the International Space Station at the end of the project.
Over the last 35 days, the Grasmere Lakes 5 class has been nurturing mysterious seeds which have started to sprout in time for the summer. The group has been part of a national project growing rocket seeds, with one of the batches coming from space. The pupils, however, do not know which of their seeds are from earth and which are from space.
The students have taken on the roles of “space gardeners” monitoring the plants’ progress – which has included recording data to be sent to the European Space Agency. Mr Peake will reveal to the children which seeds have been in space.
Teacher, Kara Smallman, said: “We are proud to be part of this national project.”
