A MAN involved in extreme pornography must wait to learn his fate after a judge said she wanted to know more about the new life he is planning to start in Russia.

Ian Turner, 41, was due to be sentenced at Carlisle Crown Court after previously admitting four counts of possessing almost 100 illegal extreme pornographic movies found by police on his computer.

Prosecutor Guy Mathieson gave details of offences which came to light last June.

“Police were called by Mr Turner’s wife. She had become concerned a couple of months before over what he had been searching for and potentially viewing on the internet. She alerted police only when the marriage ended,” said Mr Mathieson.

Examination of Turner’s computer revealed scores of banned movies. These were located in a folder within a main file which was labelled “parish council”.

“Such was the amount of (illegal) material that it was found to have taken 23 hours to download all of the information,” said Mr Mathieson.

Turner had viewed the movies before starting that download process. But the court heard there was no evidence to suggest he had gone on to look at them after that time.

Greg Hoare, defending, revealed that Turner had secured employment in Russia – teaching English to businessmen. It was stated that this employment was “still likely” to be open to Mr Turner, along with the necessary visa.

“He intends to make Russia his home for the foreseeable future,” said Mr Hoare.

“He is now divorced. He sees this opportunity of going to work abroad as being an opportunity to make a completely fresh start and commence a new life.”

But as she considered her sentence, Judge Barbara Forrester expressed concerns and announced that she needed full clarification of Turner’s job offer.

“I am concerned that we have this man, charged with these serious offences of extreme pornography. He is going to go off to another country with no control over his behaviour whatsoever, and we don’t know what is going to happen,” she said.

“I would really like written confirmation that the job and visa are still open to him with this conviction. I know a lot of countries wouldn’t allow him in.”

Judge Forrester adjourned the case until Friday.

In the meantime Turner, of Mid Street, Whitehaven, was granted bail.
