A blood-sucking plant will terrify visitors to Egremont when Whitehaven Theatre Group puts on its latest show.

Taking over the Market Hall, the group will reveal its own presentation of Little Shop of Horrors to mark the 30th anniversary of the iconic show.

The show, which runs from Tuesday, April 26 to Saturday, April 30, is based on the 1960 American comedy horror film of the same name.

"We are utterly delighted at the chance to perform such a fabulous show, filled with memorable musical numbers and some hilarious moments," said director Rachel Denwood.

Life is dreary at Mushniks; profits are non-existent, and owner Mr Mushnik (Alex Clark) is depressed about the shop's imminent closure.

Just in the nick of time, Seymour Krellborn (Chris Simpson) seems to have the answer - he's found a strange and interesting new type of plant, Audrey II, which proves to be a huge hit. But Seymour is hiding a deep dark secret as to what the plant eats to stay alive...

Rachel said: "The cast are on top form and I'm very proud of them all. The musical routines are some of the best I've ever seen and heard from the group. This is because of all their dedication."

The musical premiered in New York in the 80s and has become a firm favourite with theatre groups. It was also remade as a film, starring Rick Moranis and directed by Frank Oz, in 1986.

It is a sci-fi horror musical with a 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

The show starts at 7pm. Tickets are £7 (or £6 on opening night) from 07588051942 or www.whitehaventheatregroup.com
